Nearly every activity in Atlas, from exploration to crafting, earns you experience points. Once you’ve earned enough experience points, you can level up your character or level up your ship. However, you may notice a message at the bottom of the screen that reads.
You have reached the maximum Level (8) for a Freeport. You must explore new Regions to continue to advance.
How To Get Past Level 8 In Atlas
In order to level up past level 8, you need to reach an area that is NOT a Freeport or a Lawless area. Press I and open up your Atlas. You should see a large map, from there click the globe icon in the lower right. That will turn on the grids. Now you can see what grid you are in.After you find your location check the Discoveries tab. In the top right of the Discoveries tab you can change the region. Simply change it until you find a nearby region that does not have Lawless or Freeport. It will look like this:
