Geneshift, or how to mislead using the "free for a limited time offer" system

several months ago developer benceloft made this post in /r/gaming that caught my attention. It is about his game, Geneshift, getting a free demo with an included battle royale mode.

As a GTA2 fan I was interested so I gave it a go. The gamemode was available as a Steam demo, for free, and I had plenty of time to download it. The demo included the battle royale mode and one story mission.

Now fast forward two months, benceloft makes the following post in /r/gaming seemingly offering the full game for free for a limited time as a "thanks"

https://web.archive.org/web/20181218173237/https://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/a7btkq/after_trying_for_9_years_to_make_it_as_an_indie/

I'm like, sweet, time to play the singleplayer

except this is literally just the same demo I'd played 2 months prior, not the full game at all

battle royale, one story mission

except this time, benceloft is marketing it as a limited time free offer and the full game is now a paid DLC

what the fuck?

and sure enough, as soon as the offer ends, the demo is being sold for 8€

and the full game DLC is also 8€

also someone mentions the game has a referral system where you get one credit for each friend you get to buy the game, and for 100 credits you get the full game DLC

Am I crazy or is this just not how you do it?
