Does Travis Strikes Again Tease A New No More Heroes Game?

(This post contains some spoilers for Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes, which released today on the Nintendo Switch. While there's no story spoilers, if you don't want to know anything that happens in Suda51's newest title, you should turn away now.)

Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes is out today, making the first time Suda51 has directed a game in a decade and the first real ride for Travis Touchdown since the end of No More Heroes 2. While we actually quite liked Travis' new top-down action game, it's not the full-fledged No More Heroes title fans initially expected, and Grasshopper's team seems to realize that. In an interview at PAX last year, Suda seemed to confirm that a third mainline No More Heroes game is happening, but going by Travis Strikes Again, it may be happening sooner than we think.

After the credits roll on the game, Travis loads into a blank room with a different camera angle resembling the perspective of the previous two No More Heroes games. Beam katana in hand, he also has most of his moves from those games intact, and can practice them on a training dummy.

In the room, Travis stops and says "We're in development," but won't outright say for what. Then the No More Heroes logo comes up on a black screen, suggesting that a third title is on the way.

Does this mean that No More Heroes 3 is being worked on? Probably, but it's far from a sure bet that it's actually releasing. Grasshopper has significantly downsized in the decade since the previous two games came out, leading to the more indie-like nature of Travis Strikes Again. This new game is likely a gamble to see if they can get funding, from Nintendo or Marvelous or some publisher, to put out a new mainline No More Heroes game with acted cutscenes and extensive voice work again.

Unless publishers such as Nintendo hear a lot of fervor for No More Heroes, they might not act to pick the game up.
