Sony held their PlayStation 5 reveal event earlier today – see what the future of gaming has in store with our recap of the highlights.
PlayStation 5 Hardware
Sony states that they set out to create a console that’s “bold, stunning, and unlike any previous generation of PlayStation.” Note that there will be two versions released at launch: one with an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive, along with a PlayStation 5 Digital Edition that does not contain a disc drive. The gameplay experience will be the same in both versions.
DualSense Wireless Controller
Take a closer look at the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller with this short video. Highlights include haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, a USB port, a motion sensor, a built-in microphone and integrated speaker, and a headset jack.
Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
A follow-up to 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man, Insomniac Games tells the story of a new hero with the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Players will be able to be greater when it comes out for the PlayStation 5 this holiday season.
Horizon: Forbidden West
A follow-up to 2017’s Horizon: Zero Dawn, Horizon: Forbidden West serves as the continuation of Aloy’s story. As she moves westward, she must contend with a number of awe-inspiring machines and mysterious new threats as she braves a dangerous frontier set in a futuristic America. Guerrilla will once again work on the title, and it will be a PlayStation 5 exclusive.
Demon’s Souls
JAPAN Studio and Bluepoint Games are teaming up to remaster the PlayStation 3 classic Demon’s Souls for a new generation of consoles. The title has been completely rebuilt from the ground up, and has been enhanced with something called “Fractured Mode.” New shadow effects and ray tracing have been included, and players can choose between fidelity and frame rate graphics modes when playing.
Resident Evil Village
Players will be able to experience fear once again when the latest chapter of Capcom’s Resident Evil saga, Resident Evil Village, comes to the PlayStation 5 in 2021. Set a few years after Resident Evil 7 biohazard, this survival horror title begins with Ethan and his wife Mia living peacefully, free from their previous nightmares. However, just as things were getting back to normal for them, tragedy befalls the two once again.
Gran Turismo 7
The long-running Gran Turismo series will make its return exclusively on the PlayStation 5 with the release of Gran Turismo 7. Setting out to bring “the best features from past installments of the series alongside the future,” this release will include classic features and the reintroduction of the GT Simulation Mode. Immersive 3D audio and haptic feedback will also be included.
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
The dynamic duo of Ratchet and Clank will reunite once again with the release of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart exclusively for the PlayStation 5. Headed up by Insomniac Games, a new female lombax will also make her appearance.
Sackboy: A Big Adventure
LittleBigPlanet’s lovable protagonist Sackboy gets his own adventure with the release of Sumo Digital’s Sackboy: A Big Adventure. An all-new 3D adventure, this title will feature an immersive and expressive control scheme, and can be played solo or collaboratively with friends. The title will be a PlayStation exclusive.
DEATHLOOP
Originally announced last year during Bethesda’s E3 Showcase, Bethesda and Arkane Lyon’s Deathloop will make its way to the PlayStation 5 this holiday season. Players will take control of Colt, who is trapped in a daily time loop on the enigmatic island of Blackreef. His only chance of escape is to assassinate eight key targets before things reset once more.
GhostWire: Tokyo
Announced last year at E3 2019, Bethesda, Shinji Mikami, and Tango Gameworks’ GhostWire: Tokyo will come exclusively to the PlayStation 5 and PC in 2021. In this title, players will investigate the streets of a version of Tokyo that has been beset by spirits and other supernatural threats. However,players possess an arsenal of elemental abilities and powerful tech at their fingertips.
Project Athia
The debut title from Square Enix’s newly established studio Luminous Productions, Project Athia will transport players to a world that is filled with both dismay and beauty. Fusing together the latest technologies with art, the title will come out for the PlayStation 5 and PC.
Returnal
A new title from PlayStation Studios and Housemarque, Returnal combines roguelike gameplay in an action-packed third-person shooter. The title will feature immersive 3D audio and players will be able to switch between firing modes through the use of a single adaptive trigger.
Destruction AllStars
PlayStation Studios and Lucid are teaming up to release Destruction AllStars, an action-packed sports event that pits drivers against each other. This destruction derby title will be a PlayStation exclusive.
Hitman III
The dramatic conclusion to the World of Assassination trilogy, Agent 47 will once again take on a number of new contracts in Hitman III. The title will be available January 2021 for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online
Rockstar Games’ record-breaking and critically acclaimed open world experience Grand Theft Auto V will make its way to the PlayStation 5 in the second half of 2021. This updated version brings with it visual upgrades, technical improvements, and a number of performance enhancements.
Note that a new standalone version of Grand Theft Auto Online will also be available at no additional charge exclusively for PlayStation 5 players during the first three months of release.
Godfall
Gearbox Publishing and Counterplay Games released the first gameplay footage of their PlayStation 5 and PC title Godfall. This looter-slasher title takes place in the world of Aperion, and utilizes fast-paced melee combat. Weapon classes and a selection of armor sets known as Valorplates are also highlighted.
NBA 2K21
The latest title in 2K Games’ NBA 2K series, NBA 2K21 has been built from the ground up with the PlayStation 5 in mind. The title will feature next-generation graphics, power, and load times.
Pragmata
A new title from Capcom, Pragmata received a cryptic trailer with an astronaut and a little girl during today’s event. The title is set to release for the PlayStation 5 in 2022.
Oddworld Soulstorm
The latest title from Oddworld Inhabitants, Oddworld Soulstorm is a PlayStation console exclusive for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 for a limited time. A dark parable, it puts the spotlight on a volatile society that has been pushed to its limits. Intelligent new mechanics and twisted new devices will both make their appearance.
Astro’s Playroom
A title pre-loaded onto the PlayStation 5 console, Astro’s Playroom has players exploring four different worlds that are each based on PlayStation 5 console components. The title serves as a showcase that taps into the new features of the PlayStation 5’s DualSense wireless controller.
