Xbox one present- what’s needed?!

Single mother here-I want to get my child an Xbox for his birthday- so when his friends come over they can play fortnite and whatever else with him. What’s actually needed for this? I know the Xbox and probably an account/ does this cost extra?! A list of things would help. Thanks :)
