Bohemian Rhapsody Opens To A Huge Box Office Number

The new Queen movie Bohemian Rhapsody opened this past weekend, and it is off to a hot start. The music biopic starring Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury made around $50 million over the November 2-4 weekend in the US and Canada, according to Entertainment Weekly. That's the second-biggest opening weekend for a music biopic in the history of film, only behind Straight Outta Compton, which made $60.2 million for its opening back in 2015.

Industry estimates stated that Bohemian Rhapsody would make only $40 million at the most for its opening, so the final results are nicely ahead of that. The movie made around $72.5 million from international markets this weekend, boosting its global haul to $122.5 million. That's a nice result right out of the gate, as Bohemian Rhapsody had a reported budget of $52 million.

Bohemian Rhapsody was initially going to feature Sacha Baron Cohen in the lead role, but he dropped out all the way back in 2013 reportedly due to creative differences with the surviving members of Queen. Mr. Robot star Rami Malek would eventually get the role.

Director Bryan Singer was fired during production with Malek; the two apparently clashed, with Malek said to have complained about him to studio bosses. Dexter Fletcher, who directed the musical movie Sunshine on Leith, came to finish Bohemian Rhapsody, though Singer remains the only credited director on the project.

Bohemian Rhapsody doesn't start at the beginning of Mercury's live, but instead covers a period of 15 years when Queen was on the rise and then its comeback and performance at Live Aid 1985. In addition to Malek as Mercury, the movie stars Gwilym Lee as the iconic guitarist Brian May, while Ben Hardy plays drummer Roger Taylor, and Joe Mazzello portrays bassist John Deacon.
