Hello everyone, and welcome to the week! It’s time once again for our look back at the noteworthy updates of the last seven days. Lots of the usual suspects showing up this time around, with few in the way of surprises. But hey, that doesn’t mean the updates themselves aren’t interesting to check out. At least, I hope so. Today’s article is basically banking on it, after all. Of course, you can keep an eye out for updates yourself using AppShopper or by participating in the TouchArcade forums. This weekly summary is just here to fill you in on the things you might have missed. Let’s go for it!
Candies 'n Curses, Free The new Curse Crusher expansion has hit this adorable little platformer, and it brings a lot of stuff with it. What kind of stuff? How about six new ultra-tough stages that are unlocked after beating the Phantom King? 14 new enemies, 6 enhanced bosses, and 6 new flashlights bump up the game’s numbers all around. The IAPs have also been adjusted to give players more bang for their buck. Finally, you also get seven new achievements to try to earn. Do a lot of people still care about achievements on iOS? I’m not sure how many do, but if that’s you? Here you go!
SEGA Heroes: Match-3 RPG Quest, Free This seems like a fairly minor update for SEGA Heroes, as there are no obvious signs of new heroes or anything. However, a closer look reveals a number of new elements. There are some new enemies, such as the heavy-set fellows from Streets of Rage. Some previous event characters, like Thomas Rogan, have been added to the campaign map. More characters have also been added to the Survival and Arena shops, allowing you to unlock Agent G and others that were previously much harder to get. Small stuff, but still interesting.
Lineage 2: Revolution, Free Lineage 2 Revolution continues to truck along with new events and additions coming at a fairly regular clip. The latest event is Alice in Wonderland, which adds a number of new things to the game. Naturally, new costumes that reflect the iconic characters are the first order of business. Next, there’s an event dungeon that pits you against the Cheshire Cat to help Alice return to home. Rounding things out is a new Cheshire Cat Agathion and a Frost Wolf mount. It certainly sounds different from the usual type of event themes we see in games like this.
Subway Surfers, Free The Subway Surfers are on the move again. This time they’re headed to Seoul, where they’ll get some first-hand experience with the city’s interesting blend of the traditional and the modern. Collect robot tokens as you play to earn some nifty rewards. A new kid, Rin, joins the gang. She’s described as a neon-loving singer, so that’s a thing I guess. And you can also get Mina’s Seoul Special outfit, which imagines her as a wild pop idol.
Pocket Build, $1.99 MoonBear’s well-liked building simulator got a nice new version in the last week. It starts off with a bang: more dragons! Can you argue with that? No, you can’t. This version also adds a queen. What kind of queen? I don’t know, but she is in there. Apparently everyone took swimming lessons because characters and animals alike can now swim in water, and with that shot of courage, you can now command your people on to a boat. And, helpfully, boats can be commanded to sail. Because if they couldn’t, there wouldn’t be much point in getting on them, right?
Candy Crush Soda Saga, Free Well, it’s another regular update for a King game, and that means what it always means: a new bundle of levels and not much else. In this case, it’s 15 new levels. The update notes also mention things about bug fixes and performance improvements, but don’t they always? The main thing is that there are 15 more levels, and if you’re far enough to actually enjoy them, that might just be enough to hold you over til the next update.
Hearthstone, Free Hearthstone may not be the market-dominating game that it once was on mobile, but it’s still very popular and getting regular new content. For example, this new version adds The Dalaran Heist, a huge single-player adventure. The first chapter is free for everyone, and the remaining chapters can be unlocked with a $19.99 IAP. As an added bonus to people that buy the campaign, a Legendary Zayle, Shadow Cloak card will be added to your collection if you own the whole thing. I guess that’s nice, though I hope that Heist campaign is indeed quite substantial for that price.
Rise of Kingdoms: Lost Crusade, Free The ever-popular… what is its name this week… Rise of Kingdoms gets an update full of new goodies to mess around with. Some new features have been added to Ark of Osiris battles that allow spectators and back-up battlers. A new alliance event, Silk Road Speculators, has kicked off, which sees you cooperating with your allies to see a caravan to its destination. A new city theme has been added, and some rewards have been changed. Besides that, it’s a whole lot of little tweaks like UI improvements, balance adjustments, and bug fixes.
Star Trek Fleet Command, Free Well, not every update has something cool in it. Sometimes life is about those little disappoints, and there isn’t much we can do about that. This update, for example, really just adds a new in-game news channel to bug you when you start it up. Throw in a few UI fixes, some performance improvements in System View and Galaxy View, and a bug fix on the “Instant" button, and that’s about the size of this new version. They can’t all add new characters or ships!
Flappy Fighter, Free We’ll finish things up with the first big update to the recent darling Flappy Fighter. As many players hoped, it adds a new fighter to the game. His name is Splashy and he’s a pretty obvious tribute to Street Fighter‘s Ken. That means he shares some moves with the Ryu-inspired Flappy, but he plays differently enough to make things interesting. However, this update didn’t just add Splashy. It also removed Flappy, leaving players once again limited to mirror matches. If I’m understanding right, the idea is to introduce each character in this focused method. Down the road, players should be able to choose from all of the different fighters. It’s weird, but you know what? I’m feeling like giving it the coveted UMMSotW award anyway.
That about wraps it up for last week’s significant updates. I’m sure I’ve missed some, though, so please feel free to comment below and let everyone know if you think something should be mentioned. As usual, major updates will likely get their own news stories throughout this week, and I’ll be back next Monday to summarize and fill in the blanks. Have a great week!
