Playing loot-based games is fun. You play, you win rewards for what you play and how you play. Your time and effort actual matters and it feels like you’re not wasting a second of your life to play a game. There’s two problems that come along with playing these types of games: The end game content is always lacking and the loot you earn is useless in most cases.
It’s a never ending cycle. X players buy the game as soon as it drops. X players play the game excessively, while having fun. X players beat the game, get access to the end game content, and they still push on trying not to waste any time on the end game content. Finally, they look back for one second and see the rest of the players base they outran for miles feeling lonely and unsatisfied at how empty things are. As a result, X players who call themselves the “true player base” or the “dedicated player base” complain that there isn’t enough content. To answer X players, new content is created that only allows them to really enjoy, if not participate at all in the content, to its fullest. The rest of the player base is left behind as they are still either taking the game one day at a time or just getting started in the end game content.
My question is: Why complain about the lack of end game content when you beat the game and its end game content in a matter of days? If you feel as though the game is short, then SLOW DOWN. It’s like binge watching your favorite TV show. Even for the shows that have 50+ episodes, After you watch them all in 2 days, of course it’s gonna suck and you’re going to want more knowing there isn’t much more to give for the time being. You just have to wait. This causes many players to pick another game up to pass the time eventually leading the players stop playing them, but it’s bought upon by themselves. Just pace yourself.
Easing into my second point: The loot is rather useless. Players get too far ahead and the good loot that was supposed to be good has to be watered down to compensate. On the other end, it has to be buffed to compensate for the player’s level making the guns either useless to give an “Artificial challenge” or overpowered to meet X players difficultly. That’s in the PvAI side. In the PvP side, it’s completely one sided. X players grind their ass off to obtain the best of the best gear only to pubstomp “casual” players who just want to play a little bit PvP for fun. The hardcore gamers have their idea of fun which is the casual gamer’s nightmare while the casual gamer’s idea of fun is just a waste of time for the hardcore gamer. So they have to nerf those “best” guns to bridge the gap or make all gear equal to compensate. Either way, it takes all the hard work put into those guns and says “You grinded, so what?” It’s fair though. Imagine the old Call of Duty days where you entered a match with spawn trappers and players who already had 15 killstreaks. Unplayable.
Aside from that, the gear is just plain useless. Instead of making enemies creative and complicated, they just overbuff them giving them too much health and power or not giving you deseerved power to make the enemies seem tougher than they really are. “Artificial Difficultly.” Instead of relying on more brain power and figuring out patterns and having to find weaknesses that were difficult to find but satisfying to find, we have this “Artificial Difficulty” where enemies are very, very simplistic in terms of behavior and easy to beat. To make them “difficult” they overbuff their stats, spawn more of them, or give them extra perks on top of their extremely simplistic nature. This creates frustration for the fact that these are enemies you should be beating but you can’t because they soak your entire magazine or magic only to not be damaged halfway or they one shot you or even though you beat one enemy, there’s 50 more. OR no matter what you have equipped, they make them feel like paper and just plain air.
Then with X players constantly reaching new heights and new players joining X players’ player base, new loot is needed. This makes the good gear you wanted, old gear that gets beat out by the new gear. Not just because of X players. As you progress through the game, the enemies scale with you so if you keep playing, you’re gear gets weaker as the gear never progresses with player progression ultimately leading to wasted time.
