Picking where to land in Apex Legends is a big decision. As the jumpmaster, you have to balance your team's desire for the best possible loot with a strategy about what kind of match you're hoping to have. Do you want to drop with other players and get into a fight immediately? Would you rather avoid conflict early so you can find better gear for later battles? Where you land won't just determine how bloody the start of your match is--it'll set the tone for the rest of it as well.
No matter what kind of Apex Legends match you're looking to have when you jump, the first step is knowing what's out there. King's Canyon, currently the game's only map, is full of weapons and other loot to find, and some areas tend to have better stuff than others. Knowing where to go to get the best gear is an important factor in where you land and where you head once you're on the ground, so getting familiar with the map and knowing what you're likely to find in an area is pretty important.
Being jumpmaster can be stressful, which is why we've compiled all the information you need to know about where to drop on King's Canyon and what loot to expect when you get there. Read on for tips as to where you should go depending on what kind of match you're hoping to have, and what those supply ships and blue Hot Drop locations are all about. Go For Better Loot
Not every location in King's Canyon is equal as far as loot goes. Locations that are marked as High Tier tend to give Level 3 items and attachments--things like 4x-8x Scopes, Phoenix Kits, and extended magazines. Mid Tier locations, on the other hand, tend to have Level 2 gear. That's not guaranteed, though, and you'll find a variety of loot at every location in the game; the difference is the likelihood of better stuff randomly showing up in those locations.
High Tier locations tend to be located around the edges of the map, so you'll likely have to make longer jumps to get to them, while Mid Tier locations are a little easier to get to. Keep in mind that going for the better loot means you're probably more likely to run into other squads with the same idea.
Marked Drop Zones Might Have Gold Weapons
At the start of each match, you'll see one location marked on the map with a blue light, and a blue circle will appear over it on the map. That's the match's designated Hot Drop: In that spot, you'll find high-tier loot, including the possibility of Level 4 items. Level 4 armor pieces have special properties, like providing you with faster healing or the ability to self-revive. The Hot Drop location also has a higher chance of getting Level 4 weapons, which come with all the best attachments you can get for that gun already equipped on it. While Hot Drop areas are enticing, they're the spots you're most likely to encounter other squads, so jump with caution.
Drop Carefully To Land On Supply Ships
Another place you can reliably find high-tier loot is on supply ships. These big gray vessels hover over the battlefield and are accessible from above as you drop. If you're careful and good at gliding, you can land aboard supply ships and loot them; you can also wait until they reach their destinations, which are marked on your map, and settle into one spot. Just like High Tier loot location and marked drop zones, however, they almost always draw other squads, and the stuff they carry is limited in quantity, making for some tough fights when you board them.
You'll also sometimes find additional supply ships showing up in the middle of matches. The same rules apply--ships will start on the edge of the map and fly to a designated stop location, so you can either meet them when they come to a stop, or use a redeployment balloon to board them in transit.
Drop Early To Drop Spicy
The earlier on the drop ship's path you bug out, the more likely you are to encounter other players. That's not always a bad thing--dropping into combat immediately can be a great warm-up, and it's also the best way to build your skills if you're finding yourself getting wrecked by squads toward the end of matches. Thinning out the herd allows you to breathe a bit easier later on and helps you get better gear, both by taking out the competition from areas you want to loot and by allowing you to take stuff from those you've conquered. Most teams tend to let loose out of the drop ship as soon as a match starts, so if you do drop early, aim for a high-tier spot and dive hard. The quicker you hit the ground, the more quickly you can search for a weapon, and in those early-match battles, whoever gets a gun first tends to be the winner.
Drop Late To To Drop Lonely
If you'd rather have time to find weapons, armor, attachments, and items, you'll want to hang on until later in the drop ship's flight path when you jump. The later you drop, the lower the chances you'll run into another team, and you'll also be able to see where other squads go so you can pick a High Tier location where you (probably) won't be interrupted. In lots of matches, that means maximizing your jump--use our guide to wave-gliding to get as far as you can from the drop ship. Be aware that while you might last longer in matches where you don't see any other squads, they're likely to be more seasoned than you when you find them, and if they've been fighting other teams, they'll probably have the spoils of war that make them a bit more formidable, like better armor and weapons.
