One of the best ways you can support TouchArcade is by doing your Amazon shopping through a TouchArcade affiliate link. We’ve set up the easy to remember toucharcade.com/amazon too if you want to type that in or bookmark it. We get a small percentage of anything you buy through any of these links, which otherwise would just go to financing Jeff Bezos’s nuclear powered golf clubs or whatever else he’s up to now, and it goes a long way to supporting the site at no additional cost to you. These Amazon Items of the Day articles are all products we have used ourselves, and feel are things that the TouchArcade audience might be interested in!
If you don’t have Bluetooth audio in your car, you really don’t know what you’re missing. Getting in your car, and just having your music from your phone automagically start playing on your stereo, from your pocket, is super cool. It’s more or less become a standard feature on most cars over the years, but if you’re rolling in an older ride your options to get music going is an aux in, cassette tape adapter, or an FM radio adapter. (Or just buying a new head unit, but that’s sort of expensive.) I was riding in a friend of mine’s beater pickup truck this weekend, and he’s using the Roav by Anker to get music playing through his speakers.
The way these things work is you plug the charger in to your 12V outlet, and pair your smartphone via the typical Bluetooth pairing process. From there, you select a FM radio station that doesn’t have a local radio station on it, and tune your car stereo to that station. If you want, you can plug a charging cable into the charger as well, but it’s not required to get the audio working.
I was … really impressed by how well this thing worked. I used to use a similar device back in the iPod days in a very ancient Hyundai, and I’d say it worked ok at best. Anker is apparently using some kind of “second generation" FM modulation, and I was really impressed by how good the music actually sounded through it. Additionally, if you don’t want to bother with the FM stuff and have an aux port you can connect a simple 3.5mm cable to have Bluetooth audio go through aux instead. It does phone calls too, if you live in a state that has hands-free laws. That’s a ton of multi-tasking for $16.
