There’s a Dance Dance Revolution movie in the works. Yes, a feature film based on Konami’s arcade dancing series is coming, and contrary to all reasonable expectations, this won’t be a hybrid esports-dance competition story. Instead, the power of dance will be used to save the world itself. The project is coming courtesy of Stampede, a production company headed up by former Warner Bros. executive Greg Silverman. J. Todd Harris and Marc Marcum of Branded Entertainment will partner in production alongside Stampede and Konami. News comes via Deadline, which also provides a brief plot summary. “The project will explore a world on the brink of destruction where the only hope is to unite through the universal language of dance.” Truly, this is the message of hope we need in our times. Videogame film adaptations often don’t make it past the initial planning stages, and sometimes these projects die without ever going further than the announcement that the IP has been licensed. This DDR movie could certainly happen, but I’m still waiting for further news on the planned Tetris trilogy.
