Square Enix has regretfully announced in a press release that the company’s Chief Operating Officer for America and Europe, Mike Sherlock, has passed away unexpectedly. His service to the publishing giant spanned 13 years.

A statement from Square Enix America and Europe Chief Executive Officer, Phil Rogers, reads:

It is with tremendous sorrow that we announce the passing of our great friend and colleague, Mike Sherlock. Mike was a principled and charismatic leader who led by example. He was extremely proud of the progress and success we have shared over the years. The entire Square Enix family mourns this tragic loss, and our deepest sympathies are with his family and loved ones.

Sherlock joined Square Enix in 2005 as Senior Vice President of Marketing, and was named Chief Operating Officer in 2015. Prior to these roles, the video games industry veteran worked as President of International Publishing at Acclaim Entertainment (now defunct) and Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Sega‘s European arm.

Effective immediately, Sherlock’s duties and responsibilities will be handled by Square Enix’s executive team “to ensure the continuity of its strategic direction and operations.”

The cause of Sherlock’s death remains undisclosed. Our thoughts go out to his family, friends, and colleagues.
